That doesn’t mean that AI writes the song for you. It means you don’t have to stare at a blank project in your DAW and wonder why you ever got into music in the first place.

Mixers that actually sound the way you imagined they would

AI tools can analyse frequencies, dynamics and balance, and offer suggestions that are sometimes so spot-on that you wonder if they’ve been eavesdropping on your inner monologue. It’s no substitute for a trained ear – but it’s a brilliant way to avoid sitting there fiddling with the same EQ band until you start questioning your very existence.

Democratisation – the studio moves into your pocket

You no longer need a room full of expensive kit to experiment with sound design, composition or mastering. AI is making advanced tools accessible to more people, which is both fantastic and a little daunting. Suddenly, anyone can make music. And yes, that’s both an advantage and a disadvantage.

The downsides – when AI becomes a little too good for its own good

The biggest problem isn’t that AI can create music. It’s that people let AI create music for them and then happily say, “I’ve made a song”. No. You’ve pressed a button. There’s a difference.

Music isn’t just the end result. It’s the process, the struggle, the frustration, the joy, the swearing, and that moment when you realise you have to start all over again. If you take away the human element, you take away the soul. Then it’s just noise.

Conformity – the great musical mess

AI is trained on existing music and therefore tends to reproduce what already works. The result can be music that is technically correct but emotionally sterile. Like a perfectly tuned guitar that nobody can be bothered to play.

Over-reliance – when the tool becomes a crutch

If you let AI do everything, there’s a risk you’ll stop developing your own skills. It’s a bit like always using a sat-nav – eventually, you won’t even know how to get to the kitchen without being told what to do.

You hear this a lot, and it sounds dramatic – almost as if AI were sneaking about in the night wearing a black hoodie and breaking into music libraries.

But let’s be honest: That is exactly what every musician already does.

There are hardly any:

• a rhythm
• a chord progression
• a melodic phrase
• an mixing idea

…which hasn’t been done before. Musicians draw inspiration from everything they hear. They borrow, reshape, transform, distort and build on it. That’s how music works. That’s how music has always worked.

Blues guitarists play phrases that are older than their great-grandfather. EDM producers use structures that are so standardised you could set your watch by them. Pop songs follow melodic patterns that have been culturally ingrained since the Stone Age.

It’s not theft. It’s tradition. It’s evolution. It’s music.

AI does the same thing – only faster and with a better memory.

AI is not the enemy. Nor is it the saviour. It is a tool. A powerful, sometimes irritating, sometimes brilliant tool.
